Grant and Award Announcement

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

The W.T. and Idalia Reid Prize in Mathematics will be awarded to Max Gunzburger on Tuesday, July 8, at the 2008 SIAM Annual Meeting in San Diego, California. Gunzburger, the Francis Eppes Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Florida State University, is being recognized for his fundamental contributions to control of distributed parameter systems and computational mathematics.

Gunzburger will deliver the Reid Prize Lecture, "Numerical Methods for Two Geophysical Flow Problems," on Wednesday, July 9, in the Town and Country Ballroom at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center in San Diego. He will receive an engraved medal and a $10,000 cash prize.

Gunzburger is a former math department chair at Iowa State University and has worked with both the department of mathematics and the School of Computational Science at Florida State University since 2002. His research interests include flow control and other control problems for partial differential equations, least-squares finite element methods, superconductivity, Centroidal Voronoi tessellations, geophysical flows, image processing, material science, domain decomposition and multidisciplinary simulation and optimization, and partial differential equations. He is a member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), has been on the organizing committee of numerous conferences, and on the editorial boards of several prestigious journals, including the SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, for which he has served as Editor-in-Chief.

The Reid Prize was established in 1993 by SIAM to recognize outstanding work in, or other contributions to, the broadly defined areas of differential equations and control theory. The prize is awarded annually and may be given either for a single notable achievement or a collection of such achievements. It is funded by an endowment from the late Mrs. Idalia Reid to honor the memory of her husband. Members of the 2008 prize selection committee include: H. Thomas Banks (Chair), North Carolina State University; Christopher I. Byrnes, Washington University in St. Louis; Jim M. Cushing, University of Arizona; Terry L. Herdman, Virginia Tech.
