TORRANCE (June 10, 2008) – The Endocrine Society will present Ronald S. Swerdloff, M.D., a chief investigator at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed), with its Distinguished Educator Award during its annual convention June 15-18 in San Francisco.
The Endocrine Society, an international association of 13,000 members representing the full range of disciplines associated with endocrinology, bestows this honor to a single recipient "in recognition of exceptional achievement as an educator in the discipline of endocrinology and metabolism."
Dr. Swerdloff has been teaching for 39 years. For 35 of those years, he directed the clinical and research training programs at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, training more than 130 endocrine fellows.
"Dr. Swerdloff is a highly accomplished educator, scientist, administrator and clinician," said The Endocrine Society President Margaret A. Shupnik, Ph.D. "His educational leadership has created a legacy of outstanding trainees who have followed his example as a role model and added their own outstanding contributions to the field of reproductive endocrinology."
In addition to his work at LA BioMed, Dr. Swerdloff is a professor of medicine at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine, and he is the chief of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center's Division of Endocrinology. He has received numerous previous awards, including the Distinguished Andrologist Award from the American Society of Andrology, The Most Outstanding Faculty Award at UCLA and the Outstanding West Coast Investigator from the Western Society of Clinical Investigation.
Dr. Swerdloff has served in leadership roles for many regional and national societies, including the American Society of Andrology (President) and The Endocrine Society (Associate Editor, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism).
He was a long-time member of the Methods for Regulation of Fertility task force of the World Health Organization and has served as an adviser to China and India to oversee the development of specialized research centers on male contraception.
He also has served as the director of the UCLA Population Research Center, the UCLA World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Research in Human Reproduction, the Mellon Center for Men's Health and the National Institutes of Health Contraceptive Clinical Trials Center.
