Research in Prosthodontics and Implants Award presented to Garrett

International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research

Alexandria, Va. – Dr. Neal Garrett, Professor and Director, the Jane and Jerry Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology, School of Dentistry, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is the 2008 recipient of the Research in Prosthodontics and Implants Award to be presented at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) 86th General Session & Exhibition in Toronto, ON, Canada on July 2, 2008.

Dr. Garrett received his M.A. (1980) and Ph.D. (1982) in Psychology from the University of Southern California. He has served the Prosthodontic Group of the IADR as Treasurer, President, and Councilor. He has provided reviewing consultation to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the Journal of Dental Research, the Journal of Prosthodontics, Gerodontology, Rehabilitation Physiology, and Special Care in Dentistry. Dr. Garrett currently serves on the Editorial Review Boards for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and the Journal of the Japanese Prosthodontic Society.

Dr. Garrett is being recognized for his research focus on the restoration of oral function and quality of life following tooth loss or other oral impairment in the elderly. He has established the functional efficacy of a variety of conventional denture parameters and several types of partial and complete dentures utilizing dental implants. His research involved defining the impact on mastication, muscle effort, and patient perceptions of various denture factors.

The Research in Prosthodontics and Implants Award is generously supported by Astra Tech, Inc. and is one of the 16 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR. This award consists of a cash prize and plaque and gives recognition to outstanding research accomplishments in the field of Prosthodontics. It was expanded in 1990 to include Implantology.
