Alexandria, Va. – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) is presenting the 2008 Young Investigator Award to Dr. Philip Preshaw, Senior Lecturer in Periodontology at the School of Dental Sciences at Newcastle University in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom (UK). The award will be presented at the IADR 86th General Session & Exhibition in Toronto, ON, Canada on July 2, 2008.
Dr. Preshaw holds a B.D.S. from Newcastle University, a Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and a Ph.D. in Periodontology from Newcastle University. He is being recognized for his research focusing on clinical periodontology and applied laboratory research, specifically periodontal immunobiology, risk factors for periodontal disease (such as smoking and diabetes), and clinical trials design and execution. One study in particular on the effect of quitting smoking on periodontal treatment outcomes has attracted international media attention. The study was the first longitudinal project of its kind in which a link was found between the cessation of smoking and a favorable response to periodontal therapy.
Dr. Preshaw received the UK National Clinician Scientist award for 2004-2009, a competitive research development award given by the Medical Research Council and the UK Department of Health. He has co-authored 50 peer-reviewed publications, two periodontology textbooks, and several book chapters.
The IADR Young Investigator Award, supported by Crest Oral-B, P&G Professional Health, is designed to stimulate basic research in all dental disciplines. The recipient must not have reached his/her 40th birthday at the time the award is presented. The award consists of a cash prize and a plaque and is one of the 16 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR.
