Alexandria, Va. – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) is presenting its 2008 Oral Medicine & Pathology Research Award to Dr. Paul Speight, Dean of the School of Clinical Dentistry at the University of Sheffield, England.
The award will be presented at the IADR 86th General Session & Exhibition in Toronto, ON, Canada on July 2, 2008.
Dr. Speight's chief research areas are in the regulation of invasion of oral cancer, screening, and early detection of lymphoma in patients with Sjögren's syndrome. His diagnostic skills have helped to establish the effect and mechanism of action of photodynamic therapy. He has published widely in these areas, in addition to his roles as an editor and an examiner.
Dr. Speight has received many awards, including honors from the International Association of Oral Pathologists, the Royal Society of Medicine, London, and the Royal Colleges in the United Kingdom. He is a past president of the British Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and the International Association of Oral Pathology, and the Oral Medicine/Pathology group of the IADR. He has helped to foster Pan-European and international pathology groupings and has been a supportive mentor to the students and clinical scientists who have worked with him.
One of the 16 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, the Oral Medicine & Pathology Research Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR. The Award is supported by Sunstar Americas, Inc. and recognizes outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms governing the health and disease of the oral cavity and associated structures, principally encompassing skin, bone, and the oral soft tissue. Dr. Speight will receive a cash prize and a plaque.
