Alexandria, Va. – Dr. Kathryn Atchison is the recipient of the 2008 Behavioral, Epidemiological and Health Services Research Award, which will be presented by the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) at its 86th General Session & Exhibition in Toronto, ON, Canada on July 2, 2008.
Dr. Atchison is a Professor in the Division of Public Health and Community Dentistry School of Dentistry and the Vice- Provost of Intellectual Property & Industrial Relations at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Previously, she was the Associate Dean for Research & Knowledge Management in the School of Dentistry. After completing her dental degree at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dr. Atchison completed her Master's in Public Health at Boston University, became a Robert Wood Johnson Dental Health Services Scholar, and was a recipient of a mid-career faculty-training grant in geriatric medicine and dentistry at UCLA. Dr. Atchison was a Department of Health and Human Services Primary Health Care Policy Fellow, having been nominated for this fellowship by the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. She has served as President of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry and is a former participant in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program. Dr. Atchison is a respected international scholar and educator. She serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Dental Education and the Advisory Board of the journal, Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology.
Dr. Atchison is being recognized for her significant contributions to the field of dental public health and behavioral sciences, both in the U.S. and internationally, with more than 70 peer-reviewed articles, numerous scholarly presentations, and a wellfunded program of research.
The Behavioral, Epidemiological and Health Services Research Award is generously supported by Sunstar Americas, Inc. and is designed to stimulate and recognize outstanding achievements in the areas of behavioral science and health services research as they relate to dentistry. The award consists of a cash prize and a plaque and is one of the 16 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR.
