CAMBRIDGE, Mass., USA (June 25, 2008) – Cell is ranked cell biology's top research journal, according to new data released in the 2007 Journal Citation Reports© published by ThomsonReuters.

In the report, released this month, Cell's impact factor increased to 29.9 from 29.2 in prior year, placing Cell higher than competing research journals Science and Nature in this ThomsonReuters ranking. Cell is the flagship journal of Cell Press, an imprint of Elsevier.

The impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. The impact factor helps to evaluate a journal's relative importance, especially when compared with others in the same field.

"We are proud of Cell and the service we render the community," says Lynne Herndon, President & CEO of Cell Press. "Congratulations to the authors whose work we disseminate."

The 2007 Journal Citation Reports© show that 43 Elsevier journals ranked number one in their respective categories, including Cell Press journals Trends in Ecology & Evolution (#1 in Evolutionary Biology); and Trends in Cognitive Science (#1 in Experimental Psychology).

In addition, Cell Press titles Cell Metabolism (17.2) and Immunity (19.3) both greatly increased their impact factor from the previous year.
