How to diagnose primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma?

Peer-Reviewed Publication

World Journal of Gastroenterology

MFH is the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma in adulthood, but it originates infrequently in the pancreas. Since first described in 1976, only 20 cases of pancreatic MFH have been reported including our case. However, no report is available on recurrent case of MFH.

A research team led by Dr. Ding from Department of Radiology of Zhejiang University reported a case of recurrent primary pancreatic MFH 6 month after surgery, on May 21, 2008 in the World Journal of Gastroenterology.

Primary MFH of the pancreas is a rare and distinct clinical entity and may recur. Its prognosis is poor. If a large, massive liquescent-necrosis mass or a multilocular cystic lesion with calcification on CT or a hypo-intense area within the mass on T2-weighted image is observed in an older male patient, a diagnosis of pancreatic MFH should be considered.
