Springer is launching the International Journal of Emergency Medicine, a new quarterly publication which will focus on the various clinical advancements and research developments from around the world in emergency medicine. For the first two years, the journal will be available free of charge exclusively on Springer’s online information platform SpringerLink (www.springerlink.com). The debut issue will be published online in March 2008.
The International Journal of Emergency Medicine is directed towards physicians and medical personnel either in training or already working in the field of emergency medicine. The journal will focus on the practice of emergency medicine in a variety of settings, from urban emergency departments to rural clinics, including humanitarian and disaster situations. The content will be diverse and will feature case reports with discussions on evidence-based practice, clinical images with spot diagnosis, systematic reviews, brief research reports, quality improvement and innovations. Wyatt Decker, MD and Latha Stead, MD, both from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, are editors-in-chief.
Wyatt Decker said, “The field of emergency medicine encompasses diverse practices and overlaps with virtually every medical specialty while having its own unique core body of knowledge. By launching the International Journal of Emergency Medicine, we are looking forward to promoting the sharing of knowledge and unification of the specialty of emergency medicine.” Latha Stead continued, “The journal will serve as a valuable resource in sharing scientific and educational advances with like-minded colleagues.”

However, current journals concentrate mainly on the US, UK, and Australia; there are no adequate journals which address the needs of the global community. The International Journal of Emergency Medicine will shed light on how the specialty is being practiced in various countries, which will not only promote education but also stimulate evidence-based improvement in practice and further research.”
The publication of articles on Springer’s online information platform SpringerLink will offer immediate access to new research results. An archive print volume will contain the complete collection of articles published online that year and will be available for a charge at the end of the year. Editorial Manager, an online peer review and author submission system, Cross Reference Linking and Alert services will be fully implemented for the journal.
