UT Southwestern physicians included in new Best Doctors clinical list

Grant and Award Announcement

UT Southwestern Medical Center

DALLAS – Jan. 7, 2008 – One out of three Dallas-area physicians cited on the 2007-2008 Best Doctors in America listing are UT Southwestern Medical Center faculty.

More than 200 physicians affiliated with UT Southwestern appear on the list, which is published every two years and includes just 5 percent of U.S. doctors.

Created by Best Doctors, Inc., the list is the culmination of extensive polling of more than 40,000 of the most highly respected physicians in the U.S., who are asked to identify fellow physicians most skilled in their fields and most qualified for reviewing and treating complex medical conditions. Many UT Southwestern faculty physicians have routinely been included on the list.

Physicians selected are categorized according to areas of medical expertise. Of the 40 areas of specialties and subspecialties listed for Dallas-area doctors, 227 UT Southwestern physicians appear in 34 of those subspecialties.

Best Doctors, Inc., evaluates confidential review results and verifies additional information to meet inclusion criteria. The Best Doctors list is peer reviewed, and only doctors who excel in their specialties are chosen. Doctors do not pay to be included in the list, nor does the organization pay them to participate in the survey.

Over the past 15 years, Best Doctors has developed a database of more than 50,000 specialists in more than 30 countries, categorized in 43 medical specialties and more than 400 subspecialties.

Currently, Texas has 3,224 entries and ranks third in the country for the total Best Doctors per state. The top five specialties represented for Texas in the 2007-2008 listing are pediatric specialties, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine, ophthalmology and general pediatrics.

Dr. Willis Maddrey, executive vice president for clinical affairs at UT Southwestern, said the list reflects the excellent reputation of physicians and clinical faculty at the medical center.

“This is truly a significant testament to the quality of clinical faculty we have practicing at UT Southwestern,” he said. “It is an affirmation of our unwavering commitment to provide the best care for all of our patients in our hospitals and clinics.”
