Alexander Nikolaevich Guz has been awarded the 2007 Blaise Pascal Medal in Materials Science for “outstanding achievements in fundamental aspects of modern mechanics.” The award was presented to Guz by the Scientific Committee of the European Academy of Sciences at their General Assembly on September 12, 2007 in Brussels, Belgium.
In the award citation, Guz was commended for personally developing the theory of composite materials including all levels of composite material structure: macro, meso, and micro. The Scientific Committee said, “He is a well-known leader in the three-dimensional linearized theory of stability of solids.” Alexander Guz is the editor-in-chief of Springer’s journal International Applied Mechanics, which is a translation of Prikladnaya Mekhanika, the Russian-language edition.
The European Academy of Sciences established the Blaise Pascal Medal in 2003 to recognize outstanding contributions to science and technology and to promote excellence in research and education. The award consists of a medal and a certificate.
