The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS®) today announced that veteran member Leon Schwartz, a visiting associate professor at Yeshiva University’s Sy Syms School of Business and resident of Monsey, NY, is the winner of two awards, the INFORMS Fellow Award and the New York Chapter’s Moving Spirit Award.

The INFORMS Fellow Award is reserved for distinguished individuals who have demonstrated outstanding and exceptional accomplishments and experience in operations research and the management sciences. This year, 24 new INFORMS Fellow Awards were presented.

Fellow Award nominees are evaluated in five categories: research, practice, management, education, and service. Every winner demonstrates contributions that are truly outstanding in at least one category.

The INFORMS Fellow Award was established in 2002. Dr. Schwartz joins a distinguished group that includes past presidents of the association, winners of INFORMS awards and prizes, members of the National Academy of Engineering, and Nobel Prize winners.

In naming Dr. Schwartz a winner of the INFORMS New York Chapter’s Moving Spirit Award, the judges noted that in his 20 years of active membership, he has served in numerous posts, including President and Vice President for Programs, a post he currently holds.

The citation read, in part, “Leon has been a moving spirit of the chapter over his years of service and has contributed greatly to the ongoing success of the chapter. During his three terms as president he led the chapter through some difficult times and implemented new initiatives focused on building new leadership and strong college relations.”

Leon Schwartz is a thirty year veteran who has served in management consulting, marketing, information technology, product development, applied research, and higher education. For years, Dr. Schwartz led the corporate Management Science consulting group at Pitney Bowes, Inc. In 2001, he left the corporate world to form his own company, Informed Decisions Group http://www.informeddecisionsgroup.com, a customer relationship management consultancy.

The two awards were presented at the INFORMS annual meeting, which took place last month in Seattle.
