New overview of continental crust formation incorporates fourth dimension

Boulder, CO, USA – A new volume published by the Geological Society of America brings together 29 landmark papers on the formation of continental crust. 4-D Framework of Continental Crust includes the dimension of time, detailing processes spanning Earth's history from the Archean to the present.

According to lead editor Robert D. Hatcher, Jr., Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of Tennessee, the book is global in scope. Research addresses crustal processes on five continents with more than 50 international (i.e., non-U.S.) authors and co-authors contributing.

"All make important contributions toward our understanding of the plate tectonics and possibly pre-plate tectonics processes that form and modify continental crust through time," said Hatcher.

Major themes of the volume include:

  • Accretionary mountain-building processes
  • Pre-Cambrian crust-forming processes
  • Paleozoic crust-forming processes
  • Structural geology

Many of the papers originated at the 17th International Basement Tectonics Conference in Oak Ridge, TN, in 2004. The volume also includes a CD-ROM containing a new tectonic map of the southern and central Appalachians. Four years in the making, the map includes detail not available previously and can be printed as a wall-size map.
