Dr. Dinesh Verma to be honored with President's Leadership Award at Edwin A. Stevens Society Gala

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The Edwin A. Stevens Society of Stevens Institute of Technology will this year honor the Dean of Stevens’ School of Systems and Enterprises, Dr. Dinesh Verma, with the President’s Leadership Award at its annual Gala, to be held at the Park Avenue Club in Florham Park, N.J., Nov. 10, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Attendance at the black-tie event is by invitation only.

The President’s Leadership Award is presented to a distinguished individual who has rendered exceptional service to Stevens Institute of Technology and for his/her significant achievements and dedication to his/her field. The recipient will have demonstrated eminent commitment to advancing the students at the Institute through his/her engineering or scientific expertise and achievements. The award is given to an individual who demonstrates, by example, a commitment to advancing Stevens’ global standing in the educational and research community and has personally reached beyond campus to build alliances that raise the public’s appreciation for the resources needed to enhance the mission at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Dr. Dinesh Verma is the founding Dean of the School of Systems and Enterprises and a Professor of Systems Engineering.

In 2007, Stevens launched the new School of Systems and Enterprises to focus on interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary academics and research, rooted in systems thinking. The founding of the school was the result of the tremendous success of the Department of Systems Engineering & Engineering Management, founded in 2000, which grew rapidly to be the largest program of its kind in America. Verma served as founding director of the System Design & Operational Effectiveness program within the department, which has achieved a constituency of partners throughout the world in academia, industry and government, helping to advance the Stevens brand as the outstanding provider of high-level training in enterprise systems for aerospace, defense and other major areas of endeavor. Verma also served as an Associate Dean of the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering from 2002-2007.

Currently, Verma also serves as the Scientific Advisory to the Director of the Embedded Systems Institute in Eindhoven, Holland. Prior to coming to Stevens, he served as Technical Director at Lockheed Martin Undersea Systems, in Manassas, Virginia, in the area of adapted systems and supportability engineering processes, methods and tools for complex system development and integration.

Before joining Lockheed Martin, Verma worked as a Research Scientist at Virginia Tech and managed the University’s Systems Engineering Design Laboratory. While at Virginia Tech and afterwards, Verma continues to serve numerous companies in a consulting capacity, including Eastman Kodak, Lockheed Martin Corporation, L3 Communications, United Defense, Raytheon, IBM Corporation, Sun Microsystems, SAIC, VOLVO Car Corporation (Sweden), NOKIA (Finland), RAMSE (Finland), TU Delft (Holland), Johnson Controls, Ericsson-SAAB Avionics (Sweden), Varian Medical Systems (Finland), and Motorola. He served as an Invited Lecturer from 1995 through 2000 at the University of Exeter, United Kingdom. His professional and research activities emphasize systems engineering and design with a focus on conceptual design evaluation, preliminary design and system architecture, design decision-making, life-cycle costing, and supportability engineering. In addition to his publications, Verma has received one patent and has two pending in the areas of life-cycle costing and fuzzy logic techniques for evaluating design concepts.

Verma has authored more than 85 technical papers, book reviews, technical monographs, and co-authored two textbooks: Maintainability: A Key to Effective Serviceability and Maintenance Management (Wiley, 1995), and Economic Decision Analysis (Prentice Hall, 1998). He is a Fellow of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), a senior member of SOLE, and was elected to Sigma Xi, the honorary research society of America. He serves as a member of the External Advisory Board on Systems Engineering at SAIC, on the Systems Engineering Advisory Council (SEAC) of the Systems and Software Consortium, and the Advisory Board of the Center for Systems Engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Dinesh Verma received a doctorate and a Master of Science degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech.

The Graduate Fellowship for the School of Systems and Enterprises was created in 2007 by friends and colleagues of Dr. Dinesh Verma as an annual award to be granted to fund a full-time doctoral student entering the School of Systems and Enterprises.

The fund was established to recognize Dr. Verma because of his significant achievements in building educational and research programs, and for his national and global initiatives that led to Stevens establishing the School of Systems and Enterprises.
