Student writes his own textbook

'Don't Worry About Micro' takes the frustration out of learning microeconomics

Most students know how complicated and frustrating textbooks can be. A 21-year-old student at the London School of Economics (LSE) has now decided to create a microeconomics textbook to challenge the traditional way of teaching economics.

Using his study notes and joining forces with Professor Tobias Kretschmer, Dominik Heckner has created a text that combines the strengths of three types of publications. Don’t Worry About Micro has the academic rigour of regular textbooks, the practical nature of study guides and the student-focused approach of “popular” publications.

Tobias Kretschmer was Dominik’s lecturer at the time and is now Professor of Management and Director of the Institute for Communication Economics at the University of Munich. The motto the pair adopts in Don’t Worry About Micro is “by students for students” rather than “by economists for economists”. Dozens of students and recent graduates of the LSE were consulted for feedback in the creation of the text and chapters are structured like seminars. As such the text is the world’s only economics textbook to be co-authored by a student.

Students of economics will undoubtedly still be forced to put in a lot of effort to achieve their academic goals, but Don’t Worry About Micro has the potential to make this journey more enjoyable.
