Published by Elsevier in August 2007, Flexible Housing (http://www.architecturalpress.com/?isbn=9780750682022) investigates ways of planning housing that can adapt to different uses and technologies over time. The team collected over 150 historical examples for their research that demonstrate the economic, environmental and social benefits of flexible housing.
The RIBA President’s Awards for Research encourage and reward outstanding research in architecture. The judges’ citation for the winner of the Outstanding University-located Research called Flexible Housing, “An exemplary body of architecturally-relevant research…,offering comparative design plans, well-researched historical referencing, a new classification system and a practical manual/tool kit. About the Authors
Jeremy Till is Professor of Architecture and Director of Architectural Studies at the University of Sheffield. He is the author of several books that explore the interface between practice and theory, broadening the scope of architectural discourse by bringing cultural, philosophical and political issues to inform the design process. He has lectured and taught worldwide, including studios at the Technical University of Vienna, Aarhus School of Architecture and the University of Pennsylvania and is one of only two architects to be awarded the Fulbright Arts Fellowship.
Dr Tatjana Schneider has been working both in academia and in architectural practice. She taught Architectural History & Theory and Design Studios at schools in Germany , the University of Strathclyde and at the School of Architecture in Sheffield and is currently working as a Research Associate on the AHRC funded research project ‘The Past, Present and Future of Flexible Housing'.
