HOBOKEN, N.J. ― Stevens Institute of Technology International (SITI) will officially open its doors in the Cyber Park at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (D.R.), next Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, 5:00 p.m. EST. SITI is the result of several years of planning and collaboration among the leadership of Stevens Institute of Technology in the US and the government and higher education authorities of the D.R., including direct talks between Stevens’ President Harold J. Raveché and His Excellency Leonel Fernández, President of the Dominican Republic.
The new university will begin by offering master’s programs in engineering and technology management.
SITI is modeled after Stevens Institute of Technology, the engineering school located in Hoboken, New Jersey, that has been a critical driver of technology innovation for more than 100 years. One of the leading technological universities in the US, Stevens offers a unique educational environment called Technogenesis®, where students, faculty and industry jointly nurture new technologies from concept to marketplace realization.
The establishment of this entity of advanced learning is among the first steps toward the implementation of a broader economic strategy to establish the Dominican Republic as a center for advanced engineering, business leadership and innovative technology in areas such as computer and telecommunications software, agriproducts, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, said President Fernández.
“We see this as a major step forward in the Dominican Republic’s participation in the global high technology market, and as a model for all of Latin America,” said President Fernández. “Advanced education is key for our country developing the creative talent base to encourage firms to locate their development programs to the Dominican Republic. We look forward to Dominicans creating innovative solutions and new exciting business enterprises.”

Stevens is one the world’s premier technological universities, said Dr. Lex McCusker, Dean of the Howe School of Technology Management at Stevens in the US, who has led the effort to introduce the initial suite of graduate programs at SITI. “Stevens combines advanced engineering and management programs in partnership with private industry as part of our Technogenesis methodology. Additionally, Stevens is a leader of advanced Research and Development in several innovative technologies, including wireless, cybersecurity, nanotechnology and environmental engineering.”
Stevens began offering several graduate-level courses to officials of the Dominican government this fall, including a master’s degree program in Information Systems Management and a master’s program in Manufacturing Technology and Project Management.
During the next several years, SITI will encompass a complete undergraduate and graduate program of study, based on the Stevens Institute of Technology model.
