July 2, 2007 – Reston, Va. -- The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is proud to announce that the following awards will be presented at the AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference at the Cincinnati Duke Energy Convention Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, July 8-11.
Frederick A. Boorady, technical principal at Aerojet in Gainesville, Virginia, will receive the 2007 AIAA Wyld Propulsion Award. The award is presented for outstanding achievement in the development or application of rocket propulsion systems. Boorady is being recognized for multiple contributions to the development of numerous liquid propulsion technologies as well as developing and fielding multiple liquid propulsion systems.
Frank W. Steinle, senior engineer at the Aerospace Testing Alliance at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, will receive the 2007 AIAA Ground Testing Award. The award is presented for outstanding achievement in the development or effective utilization of technology, procedures, facilities, or modeling techniques for flight simulation, space simulation, propulsion testing, aerodynamic testing or other ground testing associated with aeronautics and astronautics. Steinle is being recognized for an exemplary career in experimental aerodynamics, wind tunnel and test technique development, and leadership to the advancement of the state-of-the-art in ground testing.
Dilip Ballal, the Hans von Ohain distinguished professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Dayton and director of the von Ohain Fuels and Combustion Center, Dayton, Ohio, will receive the 2007 AIAA Air Breathing Propulsion Award. The award is presented for meritorious accomplishments in the arts, sciences and technology of air breathing propulsion systems. Ballal is being recognized for outstanding contributions that have greatly advanced the science and art of combustors and jet fuels for air breathing propulsion.
All of the honorees will receive an engraved medal, a certificate of citation, and a rosette pin on July 11 during the awards luncheon.
In addition, Sustained Service Awards that recognize significant service and contributions to the AIAA by members of the Institute will be presented to Jeffrey Cohen of Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut; Herman Krier of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and William D. Skinner of Jacobs Technology, Inc., NASA Test Operations Group at John C. Stennis Space Center, Mississippi.
