The latest edition of the gold-standard reference for clinical microbiology is now available from ASM Press. The updated and expanded ninth edition of the Manual of Clinical Microbiology defines the standard for operating a state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory, including an optional CD-ROM of digital images.

"When it was published four years ago, the eighth edition of the Manual of Clinical Microbiology was a dramatic change from previous editions, growing from one to two volumes and increasing in length by more than 20 percent. Even though the changes in the ninth edition are not as obvious, they are no less substantial," says Editor-in-Chief Patrick R. Murray from the National Institutes of Health.

For over thirty-five years, the Manual of Clinical Microbiology has been the touchstone for generations of clinical microbiologists, laboratory technologists, and infectious disease specialists. Compiling the latest microbiology and clinical information, this landmark edition will be an invaluable reference. Clear, concise, and replete with practical advice, the two volumes bring together the latest scientific developments in clinical microbiology, clinical practice, human diseases, and diagnostic testing. For anyone who works in the field--whether in a university, laboratory, or hospital--this continues to be a must-have reference book.

As the field of clinical microbiology continues to change, the ninth edition of the Manual of Clinical Microbiology has been revised and rewritten to incorporate the most current clinical and laboratory information. In two volumes, 11 sections, and 152 chapters, it offers accessible and authoritative descriptions of important diseases, laboratory diagnosis, and therapeutic testing of all clinically significant bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. In addition, the taxonomy, biology, habitats, and clinical significance of virtually all organisms that colonize or cause disease in humans are discussed.

This new edition includes nearly 4,000 literature citations for works that were published since the previous edition of the manual. It also features a completely revised virology section, including new or expanded discussions of many viruses such as coronaviruses, metapneumoviruses, Nipah virus, avian influenza virus, and others.

Also new to the ninth edition of the Manual of Clinical Microbiology is the availability of an optional CD-ROM containing all illustrations and the corresponding captions that appear in the printed volumes. Illustrations are organized by chapter as they appear in the print manual and are provided as JPEG files that are optimized for onscreen viewing.

"Although the field of clinical microbioology is undergoing dramatic changes with the confluence of traditional techniques and exciting advances in genomics and proteomics, I believe that the Manual of Clinical Microbiology should form the road map for our understanding of this evolving scientific discipline," says Murray.
