Dr. Arthur R. Hand, Professor, Department of Craniofacial Sciences, University of Connecticut, Farmington, USA, is the recipient of the 2007 Salivary Research Award from the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), convening here today for its 85th General Session.
Dr. Hand is regarded as one of the world’s pre-eminent experts on salivary gland ultrastructure, a subject on which he has published widely. He has applied his cytochemical and morphological expertise to a wide range of studies. Thus, Dr. Hand and his collaborators have made significant contributions to our understanding of the ultrastructure and function of salivary glands, their various components and subcellular structures. Moreover, he and his collaborators have made major contributions to the role and localization of cyclic-AMP-dependent protein kinase in salivary glands, and the localization and role of lingual lipase and amylase, as well as several other salivary proteins. Dr. Hand's reputation for meticulous and significant work over the years has also led to collaboration with numerous scientists on immunochemical and ultrastructural aspects of salivary glands. Dr. Hand's scientific expertise has been widely recognized by many contributions to textbooks and invited reviews, appointments as visiting professor, organizer of several meetings, and membership on several editorial boards and committees of professional organizations, including the IADR.
The IADR Salivary Research Award, supported by the Wm. Wrigley, Jr. Company, was designed to stimulate and recognize outstanding and innovative achievements that have contributed to the basic understanding of salivary gland structure, secretion, and function, or salivary composition and function. It consists of a cash prize and a plaque, and is one of the Distinguished Scientist Awards conferred annually by the IADR, representing the highest honor the Association can bestow.
