Lennard Greenbaum, MD, president of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), along with other luminaries in the field of ultrasound, will present awards to several individuals who have significantly contributed to the field of medical diagnostic ultrasound at the 2007 AIUM Annual Convention in New York City, New York, on March 16, 2007.
The 2007 William J. Fry Memorial Lecture Award recipient is William O’Brien, Jr, PhD, from the University of Illinois. William J. Fry was a physicist with a strong interest in ultrasound in biology and medicine, whose innovative research efforts advanced the field of diagnostic sonography. In 1969, the William J. Fry Memorial Lecture Award, which recognizes an individual who has significantly contributed, in his or her particular field, to the scientific progress of medical diagnostic ultrasound, was established in his honor.
The 2007 Joseph H. Holmes Pioneer Award will be presented to Jonathan Rubin, MD, PhD, from the University of Michigan, in the category of clinical science, and to Ernest Madsen, PhD, from the University of Wisconsin, in basic science. The award was established in 1977 to honor individuals who have contributed to the growth and development of diagnostic ultrasound. Joseph H. Holmes, MD, was an important figure to both the field of diagnostic ultrasound and the AIUM.
The 2007 Distinguished Sonographer Award will be presented to Diane Kawamura, PhD, RT(R), RDMS, from Weber State University. Established in 1997, the Distinguished Sonographer Award is a means of honoring an AIUM member sonographer whose outstanding contributions to the development of diagnostic ultrasound warrant special merit.
The 2007 Honorary Fellow Awards will be presented to Leandro Fernandez, MD, of Venezuela and Seung Hyup Kim, MD, of Korea. The Honorary Fellow Award recognizes nonmembers who have contributed significantly to the field of ultrasound. Drs Fernandez and Kim will receive a complimentary lifetime membership to the AIUM.
The 2007 Memorial Hall of Fame Awards will be presented in honor of Jeanne Cullinan, MD, Francis Fry, BS, MS, and Frank Hadlock, MD. Established in 1981, the Memorial Hall of Fame serves as a posthumous tribute to a creative and devoted physician, research scientist, or other individual who has been an active member of the AIUM and contributed to the field of ultrasound in medicine. A plaque honoring each member of the Hall of Fame is displayed in a designated place in the Executive Office of the AIUM.
