New Brunswick, New Jersey – February 15, 2007 – Johnson & Johnson today announced that it will accept nominations for The 2008 Dr. Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research beginning on June 1, 2007. At that time, nominations will be accepted on-line via the Award website at http://www.pauljanssenaward.com and the winner will be announced in September 2008.

The Dr. Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research was established by Johnson & Johnson in 2004 to honor Dr. Paul Janssen, founder of Janssen Pharmaceutica. Dr. Janssen, who was known to his colleagues as Dr. Paul, was one of the most innovative, creative, and productive scientists of the 20th century. The Award is designed to acknowledge a scientist from anywhere in the world whose work has the potential to make a significant transformational contribution toward the improvement of human health. Given every two years, the Award includes a $100,000 cash prize and recipients are chosen by an independent Selection Committee composed of world-leading scientists and clinicians Solomon Snyder, M.D., D.Sc., D.Phil. (Hon. Causa), professor and director of the Department of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine will chair the Selection Committee for the 2008 Award.

“I am very honored to chair the 2008 Dr. Paul Janssen Award Selection Committee,” said Dr. Snyder. “I expect there will be many excellent scientists nominated for this award and selecting a winner will be a challenging process. However, we are looking forward to finding the scientist whose work and research has the potential to help millions of people while epitomizing the passion, leadership and innovation that defined Dr. Janssen.”

Craig C. Mello, Ph. D., a professor of Molecular Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, MA, and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, was named the inaugural recipient of the Award in September 2006 for his work in RNA interference (RNAi). Dr. Mello was later co-awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his contribution related to the discovery of to RNAi.

More information about the nomination process, as well as the 2008 Selection Committee, will become available later this spring.
