These findings match recent concerns expressed by West Australian Senator, Judith Adams, who has called for a national review of state-administered patient travel schemes.

IPP-SHR's findings indicate that whilst PTAS has a crucial role to play in buffering patients and families from the financial hardship incurred by relocation for treatment, administrative factors are preventing this scheme from being appropriately utilised.

According to IPP-SHR researcher Dr Pam McGrath, "strong indications have emerged that not only is there insufficient community awareness of this scheme, but many of those who do have access experience significant administrative difficulties".

"This is severely disadvantaging those in greatest need by magnifying the financial and emotional stress already felt by patients and their families," Dr McGrath said.
