Springer adds Genomic Medicine to biomedical publishing portfolio

Business Announcement

Springer

Starting in 2007 Springer will publish a new journal entitled Genomic Medicine, providing a forum for reporting and discussing issues related to human and medical genomics. The wide scope of this peer-reviewed journal will reflect the rapidly expanding and broad nature of the field of genomics. With this launch, Springer will enhance its growing biomedical sciences publishing program.

Genomic Medicine will publish original papers and articles related to advances and developments in a wide range of genomic areas with proven and/or likely implications for the current and future practice of clinical medicine and population health. The journal will focus on applications of genomics to complex medical disorders, common cancers, psychiatric diseases and infectious diseases as well as the genome-based development and evaluation of new drugs. Also included will be papers dealing with specific issues related to the impact of medical genomics on community and public health, medical education and training, and ethical, legal and social matters. Dr. Dhavendra Kumar, Consultant in Clinical Genetics at the Institute of Medical Genetics at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, United Kingdom is the Editor-in-Chief.

Peter Butler, Editorial Director for Life Sciences, said, "Genomic Medicine will differ from conventional human and medical genetic journals by concentrating exclusively on genomic applications to medical disorders. We are pleased to add Genomic Medicine to our portfolio, providing an outlet for specialists in all genome-related fields, from developmental biology to pharmacogenomics and from stem cell genomics to bioinformatics." Editor-in-Chief Dhavendra Kumar explained, "Numerous leading geneticists, biomedical scientists, clinicians and other related health professionals will serve on the editorial board. The journal has made a special provision to have a panel of Regional Editors representing different continents. This will ensure wide coverage and make the journal equitable and accessible to researchers and students all over the world."

Published quarterly, Genomic Medicine will appear in both electronic and print formats. Fast publication in Online First™ will make the journal accessible and searchable within the framework of SpringerLink, Springer's premier electronic information platform. All original papers and articles submitted to Genomic Medicine will be assessed through a rigorous peer-review process, keeping in line with other leading international biomedical journals. In addition, all potential authors have the option, via the Springer Open Choice program, of publishing their articles using the open access publishing model once they have been accepted for publication. The first issue is scheduled for March 2007.

Springer is the second-largest publisher worldwide in the science, technology, and medicine (STM) sector. Springer is part of Springer Science+Business Media, one of the world's leading suppliers of scientific and specialist literature. The group owns 70 publishing houses, together publishing a total of 1,450 journals and more than 5,000 new books a year.
