The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has again been ranked among the leading universities in the world, according to the 2006 comprehensive listing of the world's top universities, as published by The Times Higher Education Supplement of London.
In its listings of the world's 100 top universities in specific academic fields, the Hebrew University was listed in 43rd place in the arts and humanities – outranking Tel Aviv University in 87th place, and other leading universities such as NYU in 47th place and Brown in 48th place. The top three universities in this category were Cambridge, Oxford and Harvard.
In the field of social sciences, the Hebrew University was listed in 44th place - outranking Tel Aviv University in 51st place and other leading universities, such as Georgetown University in 66th place. The top three universities in this category were Oxford, Harvard and the London School of Economics.
In the field of bio-medical sciences, the Hebrew University was the only Israeli university listed, ranked in 63rd place. The top three universities in this category were Cambridge, Harvard and Oxford.
The Hebrew University ranked 52nd among the world's top 100 universities in the field of science, listed two places behind The Technion. The top three universities in this category were Cambridge, Oxford and Berkeley.
As for overall ranking, the university was listed in 29th place among the top 50 universities outside of Europe and North America. The only other two Israeli universities to appear on this list were Tel Aviv University in 35th place and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in 39th place.
The Times rankings - conducted for the third consecutive year - are based on a scale of indicators that include academic peer reviews, citations of academic papers written by faculty members, staff to student ratios, number of foreign students, number of researchers and a survey of global recruiters of graduates. The ranking was compiled with the help of 3,073 university academics from around the world.
Hebrew University President, Prof. Menachem Magidor, said in response to these findings, ''This survey reaffirms the fact that Hebrew University is the leading research institute in Israel and one of the best universities in the world.''
