Schneider National named winner of INFORMS Prize

Grant and Award Announcement

Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences

Hanover, MD, November 28, 2006 -- The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) today announced the award of its annual INFORMS Prize to Schneider National, the provider of truckload, logistics, and intermodal services.

Only one organization receives the award every year.

Glenn Wegryn, Associate Director, Global Analytics at Procter & Gamble and the INFORMS Award committee chair, presented the award to the Engineering and Research Department at Schneider National. The prize, he said, recognized Schneider National’s demonstrated record of using operations research (O.R.) throughout the company’s strategic, tactical, and operational levels.

"Top executives at Schneider National clearly appreciate the competitive advantage that quantitative analysis can make to an organization," says Wegryn. "They ask their O.R. team to address tough challenges throughout the company. The O.R. group's business model for success is results-driven, integral to the company's strategic goals, and has demonstrated a consistent track record of impressive contributions to the bottom line."

The award committee recognized that O.R. has been an important contributing part of Schneider’s business for over 25 years, enhancing applications in shipment and driver planning, revenue management, dedicated fleet management, and operational decision support. These applications improved annual Schneider National’s earnings by more than $10 million and exemplify O.R.’s integration into the business’s decision making.

The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences annually awards the INFORMS Prize for effective integration of operations research into organizational decision making. The award is given to an organization that has repeatedly applied the principles of O.R. in pioneering, varied, novel, and lasting ways.

The INFORMS Award was presented at the organization’s annual meeting in Pittsburgh on November 6th. Past recipients of the award include UPS, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Procter & Gamble, and Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.

Operations research is the application of advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions.
