Lost in space no more

A new annual for space enthusiasts of all ages just published

Book Announcement

Springer

A day that separated the old world from the new: On October 4, 1957, Sputnik, the first spacecraft, was launched. Today, after nearly half a century of moon landings, space shuttles and space stations, interest in space exploration hasn't waned. Every year new missions are undertaken, new rockets are launched, and new countries like India or China join the space exploration community.

To help space enthusiasts keep up with the latest, Springer and Praxis Publishing are launching an annual update on recent space launches, missions and results, to be published every autumn. Providing a balanced and entertaining review of all the world's major space programmes, the annuals will cover space exploration from a variety of angles: looking back at past missions, reviewing those currently under way and looking to those planned for the future.

The first volume, Space Exploration 2007, includes articles about building the International Space Station, results of the explortion of Mars, intercepting comets and asteroids, the latest data from space missions to Jupiter's moons, and more. With photographs on almost every page, the annual will interest space enthusiasts from teenagers through to professionals working in the worldwide space industry and journalists covering space issues. The ten invited contributions from leading figures in astronomy and space exploration will cover a variety of topics each year. The regular features include records noting satellite and rocket launches in the previous year and satellite recoveries; analysis of developments and emerging trends in space exploration; notes on records and main feats during the year; basic data on all launchers currently in operation; schedules of upcoming missions; and anniversaries and landmarks.

Brian Harvey is an internationally respected author of books on space exploration, specialising in the history and evolution of the Russian space programme, and an acknowledged expert on the space programmes of Europe, China, Japan and India. He is also a frequent writer of articles on spaceflight in various magazines and journals, and a regular broadcaster on radio and television.
