St. Louis, September 5, 2006 -- Students at New York University College of Dentistry will find a new item in their book bag as they start the new academic year -- The Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice, the foremost publication of information about evidence-based dental practice.
Through special arrangement with world-leading scientific and medical publisher Elsevier, the College has arranged to provide subscriptions to JEBDP to all students and faculty. Elsevier's educational subscription program will provide online access to the full contents of each new issue of JEBDP through the NYU Dental Library. Individual students and faculty members are also encouraged to "opt in" to receive the print edition of the journal by mail.
Beginning this fall, JEBDP will become a required element in the "Skills in Assessing the Professional Literature" courses offered in all four years of the dental school curriculum. "Today's dental students are the first to be educated wholly in the 'evidence-based' era--from their very first day of clinical practice, they'll be expected to know not just what to do but why they're doing it," comments Ralph V. Katz, DMD, MPH, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology & Health Promotion at NYU College of Dentistry. "Incorporating JEBDP into the curriculum will help our students to develop critical skills in filtering, appraising, and synthesizing information for use in clinical decisions, in order to achieve optimal health outcomes for every patient in any number of clinical circumstances."
Billed as "The Clinical Connection to Evidence and Innovation," The Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice is designed to close the gap between the best research evidence and current practice in clinical dentistry. Each quarterly issue offers Feature Articles and Clinical Opinion pieces on key issues affecting dental practice and oral health, highlighting and evaluating the current research evidence. The Article Analysis and Evaluation section offers concise, structured summaries of new articles of interest, authored and "signed" by dental clinicians and researchers. Reviews are accompanied by ratings of levels of evidence, commentaries, and recommendations, with an emphasis on objectivity.
Other features include "Reviews of Systematic Reviews" on selected topics, a look at new technologies "On the Horizon," updated Cochrane reviews, evidence-based resources, a Glossary of Evidence-Based Terms, and publication of proceedings from evidence-based dentistry conferences. All editorial content focuses squarely on the evidence-based paradigm and how to use it to improve patient outcomes and health.
Each individual receiving the journal can also have the table of contents and abstracts from each issue of JEBDP delivered directly to their PDA. Subscribers can also access Elsevier's Pocket Consult, a useful suite of online and PDA resources, including 20 useful medical calculators, daily news updates and weekly drug updates from MD Consult; and Mosby's Drug Consult handheld software.
