SIAM awards Outstanding Paper Prizes to a medley of meritorious mathematicians

Grant and Award Announcement

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics awards several prizes for outstanding papers published in SIAM's journals. The prizes, first awarded in 1999, are given for outstanding papers published in SIAM journals during the three years prior to the year of the award. Papers are selected for their originality and their effectiveness in offering a fresh look at an existing field or exploring new areas of applied mathematics. Awarded at SIAM's Annual Meeting, held this year in Boston, July 10–14, 2006, the winners represent a diverse and unique force of applied mathematicians.

The 2006 Outstanding Papers and their authors are: "Stabilizability of Stochastic Linear Systems with Finite Feedback Data Rates" published in SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Vol. 43, Issue 2, 2004. The authors are Girish N. Nair and Robin J. Evans of the University of Melbourne, Australia.

"Global Steady-State Controllability of One-Dimensional Semilinear Heat Equations" published in SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Vol. 43, Issue 2, 2004. The authors are Jean-Michel Coron and Emmanuel Trélat of Université Paris-Sud, France.

"The Primal-Dual Active Set Strategy as a Semismooth Newton Method" published in SIAM Journal on Optimization, Volume 13, Issue 3, 2003. The authors are Michael Hintermüller and Karl Kunisch of the University of Graz, Austria and Kazufumi Ito of North Carolina State University.

###

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) was founded in 1952 to support and encourage the important industrial role that applied mathematics and computational science play in advancing science and technology. Along with publishing top-rated journals, books, and a monthly periodical, SIAM News, SIAM holds about 12 conferences per year. There are also currently 45 SIAM Student Chapters and 15 SIAM Activity Groups.

SIAM's 2006 Annual Meeting themes included Dynamical systems, Industrial problems, Mathematical biology, Numerical analysis, Orthogonal polynomials and Partial differential equations.
