European Science Writers Award will be granted in Munich

Grant and Award Announcement

EuroScience Open Forum 2008

For the fourth time the Euroscience Foundation for the Advancement of European Science and Culture grants its "European Science Writ-ers Award". With this year's conferment in the context of the Euro-science Open Forum – the second pan-European scientific meeting ever staged to provide an interdisciplinary forum for open dialogue, debate, and discussion on science and technology in society – the "European Science Writers Award" has further established itself in the landscape of leading European science journalism prizes.

This is especially due to well-known European science journalists who got this 3000 Euros endowed prize before, such as the Editor of Nature, Philip Campbell, the former Chief Science Editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and currently editorial jour-nalist at Germany's largest weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT, Gero von Randow, and the former Editor-in-Chief and Cultural Editor of Swe-den's largest morning daily Dagens Nyheter, Dr. Arne Ruth.

For the second time the Euroscience Foundation makes awards to promising junior journalists. The first EuroScience Open Forum was already used to emphasise the importance of new talants in science journalism. 'To go on with this we would like to focus on young sci-ence journalists as much as we can, therefore we finally decided to grant only Junior Awards this year', says Katja Ebeling, Director of the Euroscience Foundation. 'The Euroscience Open Forum is the most appropriate platform for the Euroscience Foundation to pay at-tention to promising young science journalists'.

Junior Awards with the amount of 1.000 Euro each will go to:
Dr. Christina Berndt, editorial science journalist for medicine and life sciences at the German daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung; Bas Kast, editorial science journalist at the German daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel and author of several books, such as "Revolution im Kopf. Die Zukunft des Gehirns" and "Die Liebe und wie sich Lei-denschaft erklärt"; Miklos Hargitai, editorial science journalist at the Hungarian daily newspaper Nepszabadsag.

The laudatory speech will be given by Dr. Wilhelm Krull, Chairman of the Board of the Euroscience Foundation and Secretary General of the German Volkswagen Foundation. "With this prize, the Euro-science Foundation acknowledges the commitment and the achievements of the prize-winners in fostering communication within and across disciplines as well as between science and the wider public," says Krull. The awards will be handed over by the chief ex-ecutives of eminent European foundations.
