- IADR Distinguished Service Award
Presented to Chong-Pyoung Chung (Seoul National University, South Korea), this prestigious award was established by the IADR Board of Directors for a member who has not served as an IADR Officer but who has performed outstanding service to the Association or distinguished service over a period of time. Dr. Chung joined the IADR in 1981 and was instrumental in establishing the IADR Korean Division. The award, supported by the J. Morita Co., consists of a plaque and travel expenses to the IADR General Session in Brisbane. This is the 9th year the award has been presented. - IADR Honorary Membership
The three most recent living IADR Past Presidents may select an Honorary Member who has made significant contributions to and/or supports dental research. This year, Honorary Membership is bestowed on Robert V. Blanden, Professor, Immunology and Genetics Division, The Australian National University (Canberra). Dr. Blanden is internationally recognized for his contributions to our knowledge of the immune processes which occur in resistance to infectious agents and in recovery from infectious diseases. Although he has shown the importance of cell-mediated immune responses in several systems, it is his work, during the last 8 years, on ectromelia infection of mice which represents his major contribution. This constitutes the most complete documentation of the role of cell-mediated immunity during infection by a natural pathogen. Dr. Blanden was a pioneer in the development of a cytotoxic assay for the analysis of the kinetics and specificity of the T-lymphocyte response during the course of the infection. With others, he was responsible for demonstrating that genes in the H-2K and H-2D regions of the major histocompatibility complex of the mouse determine whether or not interaction between effector cells and target cells can occur both in vitro and in vivo. These observations have opened up a new field of investigation in immunology. His use of H-2 mutant mice, in defining the specificity of the interaction, has been particularly elegant. In addition to his experimental findings, he has also contributed significantly to theoretical considerations in cell-cell interactions in this system. - E.W. Borrow Memorial Award
Presented to Poul Erik Petersen (Global Oral Health Programme, World Health Organization), this award, established by the Borrow Foundation, recognizes and stimulates research in oral health prevention for children, with a priority for caries prevention using fluoride in different formats. This is the 15th year of the Borrow Award, which consists of a cash prize and a plaque. - The IADR David B. Scott Fellowship
Presented to Janet D.C. Kan (King's College London Dental Institute, London, UK, representing the British Division), this Fellowship is supported by the proceeds of an endowment created by the late Mrs. Nancy M. Scott in honor of her husband, David B. Scott, a Past President of the IADR. The Fellowship consists of a cash prize. - The Norton Ross Fellowship

This award, generously supported by the Lion Corporation (Japan), is intended to support improvements in oral health sciences through the stimulation of junior investigators by: (1) recognition of outstanding and innovative research in basic dental science for the improvement of public dental health; and (2) recognition of applied research achievements for the improvement and development of oral care products for the prevention of oral diseases. The 2006 Award-winners are: representing the Periodontal Research Group, Andrew Chi Chun Chan (University of Hong Kong, China); and, representing the Oral Health Research Group, Mariko Gyo (Tokyo Medical & Dental University, Japan). - The IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Awards
Established by the IADR, and generously supported by Colgate-Palmolive, to enable young investigators presenting original research in the area of oral disease prevention to travel to the IADR General Session, this award is presented to: Ayodeji Omobolanle Esan (Obefemi Awolowo University, Nigeria; Africa/Middle East), Tan Haiping (University of Hong Kong, China; Asia), Diep Hong Ha (University of Adelaide, Australia; Australia/New Zealand), Daichi Chikazu (The University of Tokyo Hospital, Japan; Asia), Michael J. Passineau (University of Alabama-Birmingham; North America), and Maximiliano S¨¦rgio Cenci (State University of Campinas, Brazil; South America). Each recipient receives US$2,000 and a plaque. - The IADR/Unilever Division Travel Awards
These awards were established to encourage outstanding young dental scientists to carry out research, attend the annual IADR General Session, and compete in the IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition. The Travel Awards are generously funded through Unilever Oral Care. This award, for the best paper published in the Journal of Dental Research, is presented in three categories: Biological, Biomaterials & Bioengineering, and Clinical. The award, named for William J. Gies, founder of the Journal of Dental Research, is supported by the Gies quasi-endowment fund and the J. Morita Co. Nominations may be made by any person, and the papers to be chosen must describe work which has very significantly advanced knowledge in some aspect of dental research. Papers eligible for consideration are those published during the 12-month period (July-June) immediately preceding the IADR General Session. The award consists of a cash prize and a plaque. The Gies Award is open to anyone who publishes in the Journal of Dental Research, the official publication of the IADR/AADR.
