Dr. Goldberg has made extensive contributions to the field of pulp biology through his research on the dentin-pulp complex over a period of some 30 years. His elegant studies at the ultrastructural level to elucidate the normal physiological structure of the dentin-pulp complex and the changes therein during caries have more recently been complemented by investigations on pulp regeneration and the pulpal responses to various restorative materials and treatments. He has published extensively in this field, with in excess of 150 selected publications within the international literature. A particular strength of his contributions has been the combination of expertise and skills in both the basic and clinical sciences that he has brought to the field, resulting in generation of good scientific research with strong clinical applications. He has been very active within the research community in promoting science in this area, through wide-ranging roles in organizations such as IADR, participation and leadership in the scientific advisory boards of international conferences, and the mentoring of younger researchers.
The IADR Pulp Biology Award is sponsored by L.D. Caulk Dentsply International and consists of a cash prize and plaque. The award recognizes, encourages, and stimulates outstanding research contributions in the field of pulp biology and is one of 15 Distinguished Scientist Awards conferred annually by the IADR, representing the highest honor the Association can bestow.
