Bazan to receive ARVO Proctor Medal

Rockville, Md. -- The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) announced today that Nicolas G. Bazan, MD, PhD, has been selected to receive the Proctor Medal, ARVO's highest honor, which is presented annually for outstanding research in the basic or clinical sciences as applied to ophthalmology. The award will be presented to Bazan during ARVO's Annual Meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in May 2007.

Bazan was chosen as the recipient of the Proctor Medal for his elucidation of the lipid pathways in the retina, his discovery of the DHA derivatives named docosanoids, his work on the platelet activating factor in inflammatory responses, and his design of agents to prevent apoptosis arising out of this work.

Bazan is Director of the Louisiana State University of Health Sciences Center and Neuroscience Center of Excellence in New Orleans. He is also Ernest C. and Ivette C. Villere Professor of Ophthalmology. Bazan received his medical and doctorate degrees from National University of Tucumán in Argentina and was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons and Harvard Medical School. From 1999 to 2001 he was president of the American Society for Neurochemistry. Bazan is the recipient of the Jacob Javits Neuroscience Award, from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, NIH, and the Endre A. Balazs Prize from the International Society of Eye Research. He serves on the editorial board of a number of publications including those for NeuroMolecular Medicine, Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology, and Current Neurovascular Research.
