Creativity as a spur to organizational enterprise and problem-solving

The 2006 HSATM Conference is devoted to the topic of creativity, as both the igniting spark of the process of innovation and the insights that move an idea along the innovation path from conception to commercialization.

"The genesis of innovation is a creative insight, one that excites the enterprise and stimulates it to undertake the process of implementation to achieve economic value," said HSATM director, Dr. Larry Gastwirt. "Where, however, does the concept come from, and how can an organization stimulate more and better ideas?

"There is a mystique around creativity," he continued. "Some believe it is an ability that only a few people have; others feel that it is a form of inspiration. Creativity in itself is a discipline, however, both in the sense of a scholarly study and a systematic approach to problem-solving. There is a considerable body of research and theory around this topic, complemented by a great deal of practical experience about how to approach the discovery side of innovation."

The HSATM is pleased to present four distinguished speakers to help clarify the subject for attendees and share their experiences:

  • David Tanner, founder and director of the DuPont Center for Creativity & Innovation, will describe some of the most productive creative thinking tools and discuss how the environment for creative thinking was enhanced at DuPont.
  • Christopher Barlow, of DePaul University and the Co-Creativity Institute, will discuss the tools, concepts, and skills available for managing complex innovations.
  • Steven Jacobs, President of Bilcare USA, will focus on leadership for creativity and innovation, drawn from his experiences in leading a successful innovation team for Johnson & Johnson.
  • Anthony Le Storti, Executive Consultant for IDEATECTS® Inc. and former director of the Center for Creative Studies, will discuss how organizations subtly crush creativity and impede innovation, exploring the "logic of failure" lurking in many policies regarding innovation and creativity.

"Following the presentations," said HSATM coordinator Sharen Glennon, "conference attendees will have the opportunity to address their toughest questions to the speakers as a panel."

Dress code is business casual. The registration fee is $300; $75 for TMEDA members; free for employees of Howe School Alliance Partners, Stevens alumni, faculty and students.

The Howe School Alliance for Technology Management is a collaboration between business and academia, which helps its partner organizations learn how better to manage technology - in the broadest sense of the term - for strategic advantage. It transfers best practices through seminars, conferences, roundtable meetings, and publications. Howe School Alliance Partners have the opportunity to exchange ideas in a collegial environment with faculty of The Howe School and a network of people in other organizations dealing with similar issues.
