AIUM Presidential Recognition Awards presented

American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine

LAUREL, MD--Lennard D. Greenbaum, MD, president of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), announced the recipients of the 2006 Presidential Recognition Award during the Board of Governors banquet at the 2006 AIUM Annual Convention in Washington, DC.

J. Brian Fowlkes, PhD, and Harvey L. Nisenbaum, MD, were selected as this year's recipients of the Presidential Recognition Award. This prestigious award honors outstanding contributions and service to the AIUM and to the broader ultrasound community. Its recipients are extremely active within the organization, frequently as committee chairs, and their names remain secret until the presentation ceremony.

Dr Fowlkes is currently affiliated with the University of Michigan Health System in the Basic Radiological Science Division of the Department of Radiology. He is an AIUM fellow and has served the association in numerous capacities. His committee participation includes the Annual Convention Committee, the Bioeffects Committee, which he has chaired, and the Technical Standards Committee. He has also been involved in numerous basic science subcommittees of the AIUM. He currently serves as a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine (JUM), the Endowment for Education and Research Committee, the Executive Committee, and the Board of Governors. Last year, he chaired the Bioeffects Consensus Conference, and most recently he has been involved in the AIUM's educational interactions with the US Food and Drug Administration on the issue of contrast agents. "Dr Fowlkes was selected for this award as a result of his dedication to the AIUM as well as his commitment to the ultrasound community as a whole," said Dr Greenbaum.

Dr Nisenbaum is the chair of medical imaging at the Pennsylvania Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia. He is an AIUM fellow who has been a member since 1975 and has served the association in many capacities as well. He has chaired the Membership Committee, the Regionalization Committee, and currently chairs the Endowment for Education and Research Committee. He has also served on the Informational Media Committee and the Editorial Board of the JUM. He is the current AIUM representative to the American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedural Terminology Advisory Committee, and prior to that, he was the AIUM representative to the AMA's Relative Value Scale Update (RUC) Advisory Committee. Dr Greenbaum thanked Dr Nisenbaum for "his service to the AIUM as well as his commitment to the multidiscipline philosophy of the AIUM."
