Springer Journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry presents its ABC Best Paper Award 2005

Young German chemist acknowledged for his excellence in the field of analytical science

Grant and Award Announcement

Springer

For the second year in a row the editors of the Springer Journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (ABC) are honoring a young author for an outstanding paper published in the journal with the ABC Best Paper Award. The 2005 Award has been presented to the chemist, Christoph Meyer (30), for his paper "Nuclear magnetic resonance and high-performance liquid chromatographic evaluation of polymer-based stationary phases immobilized on silica". Christoph Meyer will receive a Prize of 1,000 Euros, sponsored by Springer. In addition, the winning paper has received special prominence on an ABC cover.

In his research paper Christoph Meyer presents new insights on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separation abilities of novel polymer based chromatographic reversed-phase (RP) sorbents. 13C suspended-state NMR spectroscopy is applied to further understand RP-HPLC retention mechanisms. This technique also helps to "tailor" stationary phases for certain separation problems. The novel polymer based sorbents lead to faster and more selective separations of certain compounds. This may impact practical analytical work in both industry and academia.

Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (ABC) is an international journal dealing with all aspects of the analytical and bioanalytical sciences. The journal covers all fields of pure and applied analytical chemistry and bioanalysis, including topics at their interfaces with the life and health sciences, the engineering and materials sciences, environmental science, the earth sciences, and others. The Best Paper Award was created with the aim of encouraging exceptional young scientists in establishing their research careers. This Award is presented annually to a scientist up to 40 years of age who is the lead author of a paper published in ABC during the calendar year.

Christoph Meyer was born in 1976 in Schorndorf, Germany. He studied chemistry in Tübingen, Germany and San Diego, USA, receiving his master's degree in 2002 from the University of Tübingen. He was the recipient of a grant from the German Research Foundation from 2002 to 2005, during which time he earned his Ph.D., also at the University of Tübingen. He is presently Laboratory Head at Novartis Pharma AG, Basel, Switzerland.
