Rutgers College of Nursing professor authors updated edition of 'The Nursing Experience'

"The Nursing Experience: Trends, Challenges and Transitions," authored by Lucille A. Joel, a Rutgers College of Nursing faculty member, has been issued in a fifth edition with new and updated information on nursing.

The fifth edition, published by McGraw-Hill, is a compendium of the non-clinical aspects of the profession. The book reviews trends and issues in nursing and details the changing roles of registered nurses in their practice and with their employers.

The book provides information on career management, professional and educational opportunities in nursing and advice on finding the right path for career advancement.

In her book, Joel, a professor at the College of Nursing at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, provides commentary on workplace benefits and hazards, the rights and responsibilities of professional practice, and nursing publications and organizations. The book covers licensure, nursing ethics and the law, including relevant case materials. There also the stories of 50 nurses who made a difference to the nursing discipline.

Joel, an Oradell, N.J. resident, was recently elected president of the Board of Trustees of the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS).

Joel has authored several books including "Advanced Practice Nursing: Essentials for Role Development" (2004, FA Davis) and "Kelly's Dimensions of Professional Nursing" (2003, McGraw-Hill).

Joel is a recipient of the New Jersey Governor's Nursing Merit Award for Education. She received a Diva award from the New Jersey Institute of Nursing and the McManus Medal from the Nursing Education Alumni Association of Teachers College, Columbia University, She is a member of the Seton Hall University College of Nursing Hall of Honor.
