Maternal death rates in Canada are too high

Peer-Reviewed Publication

Canadian Medical Association Journal

Although Canada has relatively few maternal deaths (i.e., deaths related directly to childbirth), Donna Stewart points out that the rate can still be reduced. Women giving birth in Canada are more likely to die of indirect causes, including suicide and violence. Professor Stewart argues that Canada ought to redefine maternal mortality (and morbidity) as a broader concept, as has been done in the United Kingdom. With this broader classification, the UK has been able to identify a greater number of preventable maternal deaths.
