Rutgers College of Nursing faculty member to receive a Diva Award

Julia R. Plotnick

The Institute for Nursing of the New Jersey State Nurses Association Foundation will present one of its Diva awards to Julia R. Plotnick, a Rutgers College of Nursing visiting faculty member, at its sixth Divas and Dons gala at the Hyatt Regency Princeton on Dec. 1.

Plotnick was one of several award recipients selected for significant contributions to nursing science in New Jersey.

"I am honored that my work and contributions in addressing the children's healthcare needs have been recognized by my peers and colleagues," said Plotnick, a visiting professor at the College of Nursing at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and a Piscataway, N.J. resident.

Plotnick, who is also a consultant to the Nursing Center for Bioterrorism and Infectious Diseases Preparedness and an administrative consultant to the New Jersey Collaborating Center for Nursing at Rutgers College of Nursing, came to the college in 1996 when she retired as the Assistant Surgeon General and Chief Nurse Officer of the U.S. Public Health Service.

During her time at the U.S. Public Health Service, as a community health and maternal/child specialist, Plotnick was in charge of more than 5,000 civil service and Commissioned Corp nurses. She served as a focal point for nursing at the Department of Health and Human Services providing policy coordination and direction for nursing activities.

She also served as an international consultant on nursing and healthcare in numerous countries including Romania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zaire and Croatia and represented the United States on the Global Advisory Group on Nursing to the Director General of the World Health Organization. Plotnick has received numerous awards and citations including the Audrey Hepburn Sigma Theta Tau International Award, the U.S. Surgeon General's Medallion, and the Distinguished Service Medal from the U.S. Public Health Service. She is also an American Academy of Nursing Fellow. Plotnick earned a diploma from St. Anne's Hospital School of Nursing, Fall River, MA; a bachelor's degree from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.; and a master's degree in public health from the University of Pittsburgh.

From its headquarters at Rutgers Newark, Rutgers College of Nursing offers a broad range of academic programs on all three Rutgers campuses. The college offers a master's program with unique practitioner specialties and the only doctoral (Ph.D) nursing degree in New Jersey.
