Australia's top researchers in robotics and machine intelligence have forged a research relationship with the world-leading MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in the USA.

Today at CeBIT Australia, Dr Peter Corke, Research Director of the Autonomous Systems Laboratory at the CSIRO ICT Centre announced a collaborative research alliance which will bring researchers from MIT's computer science and artificial intelligence lab together with CSIRO researchers to work on practical applications in robotics.

"This represents a great opportunity for us to deliver our expertise in substantial projects to create robots that do real work in harsh and remote environments," Dr Corke said.

"Our expertise in mining robotics, and in underwater and aerial robotics mean we have significant synergies with the team at MIT who have great strengths in robotics, sensor networks and AI."

Dr Corke said that details of a very exciting initial project would be announced very soon.
