Dr. Meyer received his bachelor of science in 1960 from Washington-Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania, and his doctorate in 1964 from the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1964. From 1964 to 1965, he interned at Highland Alameda County Hospital in Oakland, California, and went on to serve his residency at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1965 to 1967. He then took a 2-year break from Children's Hospital to serve in the US military before returning to complete his fellowship in pediatric cardiology in 1972, following which he was appointed to the faculty.
Remaining active at Children's Hospital, Dr. Meyer continues to serve as attending pediatrician and as attending cardiologist. He founded and directed the echocardiography laboratory in 1969 and served in that capacity for 30 years. In addition to his appointments at Children's Hospital, Dr. Meyer is a staff physician at the University Hospital in Cincinnati, where he has been since 1976. He is a nationally and internationally respected echocardiographer and has been invited as a visiting professor throughout the United States, South Africa, Japan, Holland, India, and Israel.
Over the years, Dr. Meyer has contributed to a host of scientific and professional organizations, especially the AIUM. Dr. Meyer served as vice president of the AIUM, 1976–1978; as treasurer, 1981–1982; as president-elect, 1982–1984; and as president, 1984–1986. During his term as president, Dr. Meyer played a crucial part in the planning and designing of the AIUM office, then in Rockville, Maryland. Much of his planning and design efforts were carried over to the current AIUM office in Laurel, Maryland. In addition, he was a founding member of the American Society of Echocardiography and president and founding member of the Society of Pediatric Echocardiography. Dr. Meyer has presented more than 30 lectures for various societies.
The AIUM, a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to advancing the art and science of ultrasound in medicine and research through its educational, scientific, and professional activities, has been able to promote the safe and effective use of ultrasound in clinical medicine for more than 50 years.
