Top chemical producers, sales jump 23 percent in 2004, C&EN survey reports

The top 50 U.S. chemical producers had total sales of $253.9 billion in 2004, a 23 percent increase over the $206.4 billion recorded in 2003, reports Chemical & Engineering News in its May 16 issue. C&EN is the weekly newsmagazine published by the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society.

Of the 50 companies, 48 recorded increased sales from 2003 to 2004, according to the survey. Dow Chemical ranked first in sales, for the fourth consecutive year, at $40 billion, followed by DuPont at $30.1 billion and ExxonMobil Chemical at $27.8 billion.

Dow Chemical sales rose by 23 percent, sales at number two DuPont remained virtually the same as the previous year and ExxonMobil Chemical’s sales increased by 38 percent.
