Children's Hospital, Oakland's Dr. Barbara Staggers wins prestigious award

April 15, 2005 - Berkeley, CA - Dr. Barbara Staggers, director of Adolescent Medicine at Children's Hospital & Research Center at Oakland, will be awarded the Peter E. Haas Public Service Award, one of the most prestigious honors given by the University of California, Berkeley. The award recognizes an alumnus of the university who has made "a significant voluntary public contribution to the betterment of society, particularly at the community level." The award considers major areas such as: community service (including social service), health care, environmental work, and education.

Dr. Staggers has long been a champion and mentor of adolescents. She has devoted her life to increasing access to quality health care for minorities, particularly adolescents. Dr. Staggers is the director of three health clinics serving adolescents. Last fall, Dr. Staggers and Children's Hospital at Oakland opened a school-based clinic at McClymond's High School in West Oakland that serves as a national model. This safe haven provides students with a host of health and psychological care services as well as afterschool and educational programs. Dr. Staggers will open a second adolescent clinic in at the Youth Uprising site in East Oakland this summer.
