Presented to Tom Lehner (Guy's, King's and St Thomas' Hospital Medical and Dental School, King's College London, England), this prestigious award was established by the IADR Board of Directors for a member who has not served as an IADR Officer but who has performed outstanding service to the Association or distinguished service over a period of time. Dr. Lehner has been an IADR member since 1964 and won the Basic Research in Periodontal Disease Distinguished Scientist Award in 1976. The award consists of a plaque and travel expenses to the IADR General Session in Baltimore. This is the 8th year the award has been presented.
The three most recent living IADR Past Presidents may select an Honorary Member who has made significant contributions to and/or supports dental research. This year, Honorary Membership is bestowed on David Ramsay, President of the University of Maryland since 1994. An Oxford-educated physician and academician, he has established the Presidential Scholarship Fund, totaling more than $8 million, to ensure that the next generation of deserving students have the opportunity to pursue their dreams of becoming dentists, doctors, and educators.
Presented to George Stookey (Indiana University, Indianapolis, USA), this award, established by the Borrow Foundation, recognizes and stimulates research in oral health prevention for children, with a priority for caries prevention using fluoride in different formats. Dr. Stookey served on the faculty at Indiana University from 1964 until his retirement in 2001. He continues to be an active researcher, and, in 2002, he received the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award for Dental Caries Research. This is the 14th year of the Borrow Award, which consists of a cash prize and a plaque.
Presented to Marina Stella Bello Silva (University of São Paulo, representing the Brazilian Division), this Fellowship is supported by the proceeds of an endowment created by the late Mrs. Nancy M. Scott in honor of her husband, David B. Scott, a Past President of the IADR. The Fellowship consists of a cash prize.
Presented to Song Yaling (School and Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan, China, representing the Chinese Division), this Fellowship is in tribute to John A. Gray, former Executive Director of IADR, and is funded out of donations from members and sponsors. Dr. Song will pursue training in human genetics at the Lerner Research Institute, Cleveland, OH.
Presented to Marcia Daronch (University of São Paulo, representing the Brazilian Division), this Fellowship, generously funded by the GC Corporation, allows a student to conduct research in another country or otherwise outside their home institution. Dr. Daronch will spend six months at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, on a research project entitled "Biological Effects of Near-UV Radiation from Dental Curing Sources".
This award, generously supported by the Lion Corporation (Japan), is intended to support improvements in oral health sciences through the stimulation of junior investigators by: (1) recognition of outstanding and innovative research in basic dental science for the improvement of public dental health; and (2) recognition of applied research achievements for the improvement and development of oral care products for the prevention of oral diseases. The 2005 Award-winners are, representing the Behavioral Sciences & Health Services Research Group, Loc Giang Do (PhD candidate, University of Adelaide, Australia, "Fluoride Exposure, Dental Fluorosis, and Caries among South Australian Children"), and, representing the Microbiology/Immunology Group, Salunya Tancharoen (Kagoshima University, Japan, "Aquaporin Water Channel Gene: A Novel Predictor of Periodontitis in Humans").
Established by the IADR, and generously supported by Colgate-Palmolive, to enable young investigators presenting original research in the area of oral disease prevention to travel to the IADR General Session, this award is presented to: Olalekan Ayo-Yusuf (Africa/Middle East), Rahena Akther (Asia), Raghad Hashim (Australia/New Zealand), Luigi Nibali (Europe), Petros Papagerakis (North America), and Mairobys Socorro (South America). Each recipient receives US$2,000 and a plaque.
These awards were established to encourage outstanding young dental scientists to carry out research, attend the annual IADR General Session, and compete in the IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition. The Travel Awards are generously funded through Unilever Oral Care. The nine finalists from the AADR/Pfizer Hatton Awards Competition will also receive travel assistance in the form of an IADR/Unilever Division Travel Award.
These new awards were designed to inspire innovation and novel research in oral care and to offer opportunities for investigators to conduct research into the development of innovative and novel compounds, biomaterials, or devices with a direct impact on the qualify of life of the public. The awards are in the form of unrestricted research grants, and the winning teams will share $225,000. The 2005 winners, and the titles of their projects, are:

- Peter Holbrook and co-workers, University of Iceland, Reykjavik, A Novel Treatment for Cold Sores
- Lin Tao and co-workers, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA, A Novel Formula Protects Infants from HIV
This award, for the best paper published in the Journal of Dental Research, is presented in three categories: Biological, Biomaterials & Bioengineering, and Clinical. The award, named for William J. Gies, founder of the Journal of Dental Research, is supported by the Endowment Fund of the JDR. Nominations may be made by any person, and the papers to be chosen must describe work which has very significantly advanced knowledge in some aspect of dental research. Papers eligible for consideration are those published during the 12-month period (July-June) immediately preceding the IADR General Session. The award consists of a cash prize and a plaque. The Gies Award is open to anyone who publishes in the Journal of Dental Research, the official publication of the IADR/AADR.

Presented to Linda Niessen (Baylor College of Dentistry, Dallas, TX, USA), this award honors an individual who has given exemplary service in the area of public affairs by consistently promoting the interests and activities of oral health research to a wide constituency. As Chair of the Friends of the NIDCR, Dr. Niessen is a true public servant continuously advancing the cause of oral health research and its implications for improvement in overall health and well-being. The award is supported by the AADR and consists of a plaque. Previous recipients of the Award are Jack W. Hein (1996), Gertrude Quigley (1997), Christopher Squier (1998), Jay Gershen (1999), Anthony Picozzi (2000), John Crawford (2001), Michael Barnett (2002), Judith Sherman (2003), and Michael Alfano (2004).
This award is presented to Petros Papagerakis (University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, USA). He plans to further his research in the area of periodontal tissue development, mainly diseases affecting periodontal tissue formation. The award, sponsored by the Procter & Gamble Co., is in memory of William B. Clark, the late Professor of Oral Biology and Director of the Periodontal Research Center at the University of Florida.
This award is presented to Rena D'Souza (University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston Dental Branch, USA).
