Dr. Rozier is an outstanding scholar known worldwide for his leadership in Dental Public Health and oral epidemiology. His scholarly work and innovations have been adopted nationally and throughout the world. He has been active in public health service, and is known for his unfailing commitment to improving the quality of dental health practice. He directs one of the world´s leading training programs in Dental Public Health, and his graduates hold significant academic and public health practice positions throughout the world. Three themes run through Dr. Rozier´s distinguished research career. First, he has been devoted to developing methods and epidemiological findings to help facilitate basic public health core functions. Second, he has conducted dental health services research concerning access to dental care, particularly for the disadvantaged. His third area of research is on effective public health and professional interventions to promote oral health and prevent dental diseases. He currently holds research grants that integrate these three areas of research into a research agenda addressing dental caries, the most widespread and costly disease of childhood (supported by four US Federal agencies). Most of his efforts are focused directly on having an immediate but lasting impact on the public´s health. In the area of preventive dentistry, Dr. Rozier and his collaborators have studied various aspects of community water fluoridation, sealants, fluoride mouthrinse, fluoride supplements, professionally applied topical fluoride, and various combinations.
Dr. Rozier is truly an outstanding Dental Health scholar, with about 80 publications, and has maintained a vigorous teaching program in Dental Public Health.
This prestigious award is presented annually by the IADR and is supported by the Colgate-Palmolive Company and a bequest from the estate of Frank J. McClure in memory of H. Trendley Dean, the 21st President of the IADR and first dental officer of the National Institutes of Health. The award, which consists of a cash prize and a plaque, is conferred for distinguished accomplishments in research and development in the fields of behavioral science, epidemiology, and public health.
