The American Psychoanalytic Association does not oppose advances in medical technology that improve the science of medicine. But the development of the medical identification chip, like recent advances in genetic testing, illustrate the importance of preserving the traditional right of patients to give or withhold consent for treatment and the disclosure their personal medical information. Patients who are forced or coerced to disclose their personal health information will simply protect their privacy by avoiding necessary medical care.
