Survive and conquer with Wiley Survival Guides

Wiley launches new series of engineering and science books

Book Announcement

Wiley

John Wiley & Sons, Inc., announces the launch of the Wiley Survival Guides--a new series of challenging and illuminating books that will enable both the professional and layperson to triumph in the fields of engineering and science. These clear, factual overviews prepare both students for a future vocation in varying fields, as well as accomplished professionals looking for a career move. Equipped with the essential knowledge contained within these guides, readers will be able to take advantage of the job opportunities available in their areas of interest.

The Series will encompass such diverse fields as:

  • Telecommunications
  • Photonics
  • Microwaves and Electronics
  • Robotics and Automation
  • Probability and Random Processes
  • Air and Space Sciences
  • Astronomy and Cosmology

The first books in this indispensable series are the "Wiley Survival Guide in Global Telecommunications: Broadband Access, Optical Components and Networks, and Cryptography;: and the "Wiley Survival Guide in Global Telecommunications: Signaling Principles, Network Protocols, and Wireless Systems." Designed to be accessible to a wide range of readers, these titles provide a quick introduction to the most important telecommunications technologies, while avoiding any unnecessary background in order to offer the core information. The books steer readers directly into the relevant issues while elucidating the science and engineering involved without complex mathematics. Together, both volumes offer a wealth of practical and easy exercises illustrating concepts; chapter opening abstracts; chapter-end summaries of main keywords and acronyms clarifying the technical language; and a selected reference list (including web sites) providing other helpful sources for further investigation.

"Broadband Access, Optical Components and Networks, and Cryptography" addresses such topics as broadband wireless access, including XVDSL, VoDSL, FTTx, xPON, HFC, and home networking; optical communications, from integrated/fiber waveguide principles to passive/active photonics components; WDM transport and standards; cryptography; and communications security over the Internet. "Signaling Principles, Network Protocols, and Wireless Systems" provides in-depth discussions of such key areas as signal modulation, coding, transmission, detection, and error correction; telephony and data networking, from PSTN to packet-switched/LAN protocols and ISDN; core-network transmission protocols, including SONET/SDH, ATM, TCP/IP, and Internet suite; and wireless communications, including 3G/4G mobile, satellite, and WLAN.

In addition to the Wiley Survival Guides in Global Telecommunications, titles in this series will be publishing three to four times a year. Available in November 2005, the next book in the Wiley Survival Guides series--Probability and Random Process-- is a quick reference to a compendium of probability and random processes concepts, functions, and formulae needed by students and practicing engineers for their research and projects.

About the Series Editor and Author:

Emanuel Desurvire, Ph.D., has been involved in optical telecommunications for nearly twenty years, beginning with doctoral work on Raman fiber amplifiers at Thomson-CSF, followed by post-doctoral research at Stanford University. He went on to work for AT&T Bell Laboratories for five years, took a two-year professorship at Columbia University, and then joined Alcatel, where he conducted research on long-haul solution transmission and all-optical regeneration, as well as 40Gbit/s systems development. He is an IEEE Fellow, and has authored or co-authored more than 200 technical publications, four books, and more than 30 patents.
