HOUSTON – Texas Children's Hospital, the nation's largest pediatric hospital, rose to the No. 4 spot in the ranking of the top 10 pediatric hospitals in the nation, according to the U.S.News & World Report "America's Best Hospitals" list released today. The hospital also was ranked the best pediatric hospital in the South and Southwest by the magazine.

In addition, Texas Children's reputational score rose to 18 percent, up from last year's score of 13.9 percent. A hospital's reputational score shows the percentage of pediatricians responding to the survey who named the hospital one of the top five in their specialty.

This is the fifth consecutive year Texas Children's has ranked among the top 10 pediatric hospitals in the U.S.News & World Report survey, which uses doctors' opinions to judge hospital reputations.

"The annual appearance of Texas Children's in the rankings is a testimony to our mission of providing the state-of-the-art pediatric patient care, education and research," said Mark A. Wallace, president and chief executive officer of Texas Children's Hospital. "It's a major accomplishment to be cited by pediatricians nationwide as one of America's best, and our employees and medical staff are very pleased and proud," he said. "It's gratifying to see that the Texas Children's commitment to excellence in every area is being recognized nationally."

Texas Children's, the primary pediatric teaching hospital for Baylor College of Medicine, is renowned for its expertise and breakthrough developments in the treatment of cancer, premature infants, cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, infectious diseases, pediatric neurologic diseases, diabetes, asthma, HIV/AIDS and attention-related disorders.

"The high ranking of Texas Children's is a reflection of the outstanding work of our physicians and staff, our clinics and our ongoing commitment to pediatric research," said Dr. Ralph D. Feigin, physician-in-chief of Texas Children's and chairman of the department of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine.

Texas Children's also is ranked among the top five children's hospitals in the United States by Child magazine, which uses objective data and findings of the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations to rank hospitals.

Texas Children's currently is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Since 1954, the Texas Children's Integrated Delivery System has cared for more than one million children.

The hospital, licensed for 697 beds, offers more than 40 pediatric subspecialties.

The Texas Children's system has more than 5,000 employees, plus 1,649 board-certified, primary-care physicians, pediatric subspecialists, pediatric-surgical subspecialists and dentists.

In partnership with Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children's has taken the No. 1 spot in grant funding for pediatrics from the National Institutes of Health for two consecutive years. The hospital's neonatology, heart and cancer centers have outcomes that consistently rank among the best in the nation.
