Awards & fellowships presented in Hawaii

Grant and Award Announcement

International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research

Honolulu, Hawaii...As part of the Opening Ceremonies of their 82nd General Session and 33rd Annual Meeting, convening today at the Hawaii Convention Center, the International and American Associations for Dental Research will present numerous prestigious awards and fellowships. Details follow:

• IADR Distinguished Service Award

Presented to Christopher Squier (University of Iowa, Iowa City, USA), this prestigious award was established by the IADR Board of Directors for a member who has not served as an IADR Officer but who has performed outstanding service to the Association or distinguished service over a period of time. The award consists of a plaque and travel expenses to the IADR General Session in Honolulu.

• E.W. Borrow Memorial Award

Presented to Jan Ekstrand (Karolinska Institute, Sweden), this award, established by the Borrow Foundation, recognizes and stimulates research in oral health prevention for children, with a priority for caries prevention using fluoride in different formats. This is the 13th year of the award, which consists of a cash prize and a plaque.

• The IADR David B. Scott Fellowship

Presented to Amrita Ranchod (University of Otago, representing the Australia/New Zealand Division), this Fellowship is supported by the proceeds of an endowment created by the late Mrs. Nancy M. Scott in honor of her husband, David B. Scott, a Past President of the IADR. The Fellowship consists of a cash prize.

• IADR/Lion Dental Research Award for Junior Investigators

This award, generously supported by the Lion Corporation (Japan), is intended to support improvements in oral health sciences through the stimulation of junior investigators by: (1) recognition of outstanding and innovative research in basic dental science for the improvement of public dental health; and (2) recognition of applied research achievements for the improvement and development of oral care products for the prevention of oral diseases. The 2004 Award-winners are, representing the Periodontal Research Group, Özgur Özdemir (University of Istanbul, Turkey), and, representing the Salivary Research Group, Ji Li (Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Boston University, MA, USA).

• The IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Awards

Established by the IADR, and generously supported by Colgate-Palmolive, to enable young investigators presenting original research in the area of oral disease prevention to travel to the IADR General Session, this award is presented to: Loc Giang Do (Australia), Giovana Daniela Pecharki (Brazil), Akihisa Fukuda (Japan), Nadia Al-Hazmi (UK), and Quang L. Nguyen and Shimin Li (USA). Each recipient receives US$2,000 and a plaque.

• The IADR/Unilever Division Travel Awards

These awards were established to encourage outstanding young dental scientists to carry out research, attend the annual IADR General Session, and compete in the IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition. The Travel Awards are generously funded through Unilever Oral Care. In 2004, the following 31persons from 16 Divisions received funding for travel to the IADR's 82nd General Session in Honolulu: (Argentine) Maria Isabel Brusca; (Australia/New Zealand) Vivian Tam, Adrian DeAngelis; (Brazil) Paloma Dias Da Silva Telles, Gustavo Garlet; (British) Harprit Jandu, Julia McClachlan, Paula Smith; (Canadian) Houman Nourkeyhani, Dilani Senadheera; (Chinese) Min Nie, Peng Li; (Continental European) Wim Teughels, Stefan Lossdörfer; (Irish) Justin Barnes, Rory Maguire; (Israeli) Michael Shohat; (Japanese) Hideo Shinagawa, Masanori Koide, Hiroyuki Kanzaki, Takeyoshi Doi, Satoshi Tsutsumi; (Korean) Hee-Su Lee; (Mexican) Anel Carpio-Morales; (Scandinavian) Fernanda Petersen, Thorbjorg Jensdottir; (South African) E. Fakir, C.S. Solomon; (Southeast Asian) Hung Trung Hoang, Kai Soo Tan; and (Venezuelan) Ines Maria Bravo. The nine finalists from the AADR/Pfizer Hatton Awards Competition will also receive travel assistance in the form of an IADR/Unilever Division Travel Award.

• The Norton Ross Fellowship

This award is generously supported by Pfizer Inc. in memory of the late Norton Ross. The Fellowship consists of a cash prize and is presented to Aiko Nakasone, Graduate School, Tokyo Medical & Dental University, Japan.

• IADR/GlaxoSmithKline Innovation in Oral Care Awards

These new awards were designed to inspire innovation and novel research in oral care and to offer opportunities for investigators to conduct research into the development of innovative and novel compounds, biomaterials, or devices with a direct impact on the qualify of life of the public. The awards are in the form of unrestricted research grants, and the winning teams will share $360,000. The 2004 winners, and the titles of their projects, are:

  • Marie-Claude Amoureux and co-workers, Clarigen, Inc., Carlsbad, CA, USA, Control of the Formation of Biofilm and the Expression of Virulence Factors in the Mouth by Binding Quorum-sensing Molecules
  • Jack Ferracane and co-workers, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, USA, Novel Dental Desensitizing Agent Based on a Biomimetic Approach
  • Spencer Redding and co-workers, University of Texas-San Antonio, USA, Prevention of Candida-associated Denture Stomatitis
  • Doron Steinberg and co-workers, Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel, Development of Pharmaceutical Technology for Sustained-release Delivery Systems of Antibacterial Peptides: The Effect on Dental Biofilms and Oral Diseases

• William J. Gies Award

This award, for the best paper published in the Journal of Dental Research, is presented in three categories: Biological, Biomaterials & Bioengineering, and Clinical. The award, named for William J. Gies, founder of the Journal of Dental Research, is supported by the Endowment Fund of the JDR. Nominations may be made by any person, and the papers to be chosen must describe work which has very significantly advanced knowledge in some aspect of dental research. Papers eligible for consideration are those published during the 12-month period (July-June) immediately preceding the IADR General Session. The award consists of a cash prize and a plaque. The Gies Award is open to anyone who publishes in the Journal of Dental Research, the official publication of the IADR/AADR.

–The award in the Biological category is presented to K. Kohama, K. Nonaka, R. Hosokawa, L. Shum, and M. Ohishi (Kyushu University, Japan, and the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA) for "TGF-beta-3 Promotes Scarless Repair of Cleft Lip in Mouse Fetuses" (J Dent Res 81:688-694, 2002).
– The award in the Biomaterials & Bioengineering category is presented to C.S. Young, S. Terada, J.P. Vacanti, M. Honda, J.D. Bartlett, and P.C. Yelick (The Forsyth Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, USA, and Nagoya University, Japan) for "Tissue Engineering of Complex Tooth Structures on Biodegradable Polymer Scaffolds" (J Dent Res 81:695-700, 2002).
– The award in the Clinical category is presented to M. Onozuka, M. Fujita, K. Watanabe, Y. Hirano, M. Niwa, K. Nishiyama, and S. Saito (Gifu University, Yoro Central Hospital, Kanagawa Dental College, and Oral Health Association of Japan), for "Mapping Brain Region Activity during Chewing: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study" (J Dent Res 81:743-746, 2002).

• IADR/Hatton Unilever Awards Competition winners

• AADR Distinguished Scientist Award

Presented to James D. Beck (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA), the Award is supported by GlaxoSmithKline and was established to recognize and honor outstanding research of particular significance in a field related to oral science. Criteria for the Award are based on (1) originality and creativity of contributions, (2) sustained record of achievement, and (3) importance/significance of the research for oral health. The Award consists of a $5,000 cash prize and a plaque. Previous recipients include Ronald Gibbons (1989), Paul Goldhaber (1992), Henning Birkedal-Hansen (1998), and Roy C. Page (2001).

• Jack Hein Public Service Award

Presented to Michael Alfano (New York University, USA), this award honors an individual who has given exemplary service in the area of public affairs by consistently promoting the interests and activities of oral health research to a wide constituency. The award is supported by the AADR and consists of a plaque. Previous recipients of the Award are Jack W. Hein (1996), Gertrude Quigley (1997), Christopher Squier (1998), Jay Gershen (1999), Anthony Picozzi (2000), John Crawford (2001), Michael Barnett (2002), and Judith Sherman (2003).

• William B. Clark Fellowship in Clinical Research

This award is presented to Ryan Harris (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA). The award, sponsored by the Procter & Gamble Co., is in memory of William B. Clark, the late Professor of Oral Biology and Director of the Periodontal Research Center at the University of Florida.

• National Student Research Group Mentor Award

This award is presented to Kenneth Etzel (University of Pittsburgh, PA, USA).

• AADR/Pfizer Student Research Fellowship winners and winners of the Caulk/Dentsply Competition

• NIDCR Bloc Travel Grant Winners – The American Association for Dental Research received a Supplement to the Bloc
