Dr. Smith has made an invaluable contribution to the field of pulp biology for many years and has distinguished not only himself but also the team that he has built at the international level. His work has produced new and exciting knowledge in relation to dentin-pulp repair mechanisms and the influence of biomaterials on dentin and pulp response. Of particular note is his development of a tooth slice organ culture model which has been adopted by parallel research laboratories world-wide.
Professor Smith is without doubt the international authority in his area, as attested by the large group of successful post-graduate, post-doctoral, and technical staff who have benefited from his scholastic leadership and his caring, enthusiastic approach.
And, effective April 1, 2004, he will become Editor of the Journal of Dental Research, the IADR's flagship publication (see release elsewhere in this Kit).
The IADR Pulp Biology Award is sponsored by the L.D. Caulk Division of Dentsply International and the IADR Pulp Biology Group and consists of a cash prize and plaque. The award recognizes, encourages, and stimulates outstanding research contributions in the field of pulp biology and is one of 15 Distinguished Scientist Awards conferred annually by the IADR, representing the highest honor the Association can bestow.
